What’s in a name?

Well, for us, a lot. We often get asked “Where did you come up with the name 144design?”

While many people choose eponymous company names, our creative director and founder, Sam Gross, thought “Gross Design” didn’t quite capture his vision for the company. In search of a better name, Sam found inspiration from his dad’s framing business, 12dozen. In mathematical terms, 12 is called a “dozen”, so 12 dozen (12×12) equals 144. So, just as 12 is a “dozen”, 144 is called a “gross”. Part ode to his dad’s legacy, part evasion of the eponymous “Gross Design”, 144design was born.
